COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The lawyer who prosecuted the Aurora theater shooting case is now running for governor. 11 News sat down with 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler.
Brauchler has been vocal about the fact that we don't know where James Holmes is being held. You'll remember it was the focus of our 11 Call For Action Investigation.
11 News asked Brauchler what will happen if he's elected governor. If Brauchler is elected, then as governor he has the right to find out where Holmes is -- and he told 11 News that he will.
“Yes, as governor, I’m going to do what I think is right. What I think is right is to let those victims know – because by the way it is the spirit of our law – I’m going to let them know where the person who killed their loved one is being housed," said Brauchler.
“I do not buy off on the idea that we lack the ability to keep that person safe if everyone knew where he was," Brauchler told 11 News. "In fact, I’m going to bring him back to Colorado.”
Transportation is also a priority for the candidate.
"You don't have to be from Colorado Springs to be affected by the fact that our roads suck. I drive these roads all the time. I'm down here at Ft. Carson – I'm still a colonel – I drive down here to Ft. Carson and Peterson Air Force Base not infrequently. I see what the roads do to people."
Former state Sen. Mike Johnston has already thrown his hat in the ring on the democratic side. One of his pledges is two years of debt-free college for those who volunteer for the state.
"That will give them the chance to change careers or move careers as the economy's and the industries that they are a part of change overnight," said Johnston.
Democrat and Denver businessman Noel Ginsburg has also tossed his name in the hat.
There are also whispers that U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter is expected to announce his run for governor on the democratic ticket.
Governor John Hickenlooper can't run because he will be term-limited.
Voters will decide the next governor in November 2018.
